Sanatan Dharma ( सनातन धर्म )
Calling 'Sanatan Dharma' mere a religion isn't justifiable because in itself it is a way of living i.e. living on the terms of righteousness.
'Sanatan' means eternal, which means something endless (everlasting, perpetual, timeless, etc.)
'Dharma' means righteous duty which can further be classified between two
-
Atmandharma - These are the duties performed as per one's spritual conditions. Being honest, refraining from harming living beings, purity, goodwill, mercy, patience, forbearance, self-restraint, generosity, and asceticism.
-
Swadharma - These are the duties performed as per one's material conditions. These are specific to the individual at that particular time according to his or her class/varna and stage of life. The duty of a warrior is to fight in a war. Meanwhile, the duty of a doctor is to save lives (even of an enemy). So, as per the conditions, and what role a person is playing in the society the righteous duty to be performed by him/her are changed.
